Music meme day eight

Day eight: A song about drugs or alcohol.

Songs about drugs and alcohol? Surely there are no such things! I have thought quite a bit about this, and have decided that, largely because it's unlikely that anybody else will have chosen it, there can be only one answer. My family used to sing this song all the time when it was in the charts, because it amused us (I have literally no idea why our mother didn't run away from home decades ago. I'm sure I would have done). It's utterly dire, so I do apologise, but that's the seventies for you.

Spodgenessabounds: Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, Please.

(Oh, and apparently it was 1980, not the seventies. Sorry, it's probably the drugs and alcohol messing with my mind.)

PS: On the subject of music, you need today's Google Doodle in your life. In celebration of the birth of Oskar Fischinger (22nd June 1900), you can play with a composition thingy, and write your own bits of music. It's lots of fun.

Ah, dodgy novelty punk songs! Shame it gave birth to a dodgy sit-com;p

So it did! I'd forgotten that. That was dire as well!

Mind you a little credit is probably due for the name Splodgenessabounds. Also, their angry punk version of Rolf Harris's "Two Little Boys" is worth a giggle. I'm never entirely sure just how funny they were intending to be though.

With a name like Splodgenessabounds they were doomed to never be taken seriously!

Fair point!

I saw that Google Doodle - it was so good!

Why did the 70s and 80s have so much bad music?

I think it's because there was so much variety in the charts back then. If you watch the old TOTP repeats, there's so much different stuff going on. Punk, hair rock, glam rock, new wave, electronica, novelty records galore. There isn't anywhere near that kind of variety now. There was a documentary about TOTP on BBC4 recently, and they were mocking it for its eclecticism, but to me that was one of its strengths.

We've just hit 1984 in the repeats. Black Lace singing "Agadoo"! :D

You post the most obscure songs ... *lol*

I don't think it was very obscure at the time. Admittedly it was a long time ago though!
