"Hart To Hart" remake planned

This is either going to be the best thing to hit screens for a long, long time, or a total disaster (always supposing that it does actually go ahead): NBC are apparently planning a gay version of the seventies classic Hart To Hart. The original was wonderful, ridiculous fun. Any remake of it would probably be a good way to cheer up the schedules. But a gay version, if done right, ought be just what television needs.

For those who don't know (is that anybody?!) Hart To Hart was the story of glamorous married couple Jonathan and Jennifer Hart. He was a former street urchin, an orphan from who-knew-where, who had dragged himself up by his bootstraps and become a multi-millionaire. She was a jet-setting adventure-seeker. Together with their butler Max (a reformed con artist, who had practically raised Jonathan), and their all important dog, Freeway, they fell headlong into adventure each week, and had a whale of a time getting back out of it again. Jonathan had his dodgy past to help him, and Jennifer had brains (and extraordinary luck!). Fisticuffs and nonsense abounded. Nobody got in a car unless it was to have a high speed chase, stuff blew up with charming regularity, everybody shot at everybody else - and alongside all the action was terrific chemistry, real affection, and a lot of laughs. It was absolute nonsense, but hugely endearing and very successful.

And a gay version? Swashbuckling gay heroes! Gay men getting to do proper action scenes, and rescuing each other and stuff. Generally I hate the idea of remakes, but if they're going to do something interesting and different with the premise, I'm on board. The problem is, this needs to be really good if it's going to succeed. And it's being made by NBC, who forgot how to make good television years ago. Still, it's a great idea. Somebody hire Matt Bomer to play Jonathan, quick.

OMG, Matt Bomer yes perfect. I'm in the middle of White Collar now, it's awesome. I'm also very excited about Mark Ruffalo being in talks to play Columbo.

Remakes of the truly great TV 'tecs FTW! Very curious about casting for 'Mr' Hart, too. And Max. And Freeway.

ETA: I know it sounds crazy, but if 'Mr' Hart was Simon Pegg, I personally think that would be gosh-darn awesome. And he's sort-of gingerish.

"White Collar" is fab. Where are you up to? I hadn't heard that about Ruffalo. He's a good choice for Columbo. I'm wary, as "Kojak" and "Ironside", two of my favourites, have had truly dire remakes that totally missed the point. But we'll see.

I'm wondering if Max might be Maxine this time. Bit male-dominated otherwise.

Catherine Tate for Maxine? She would be flippin' brilliant delivering, "When they got togedder, it was MOIDER!"

Halfway through S3 for White Collar - Mozzie is my soul-brother.

I think Ruffalo is a little tall for Columbo - he's so much the unassuming little guy looking up at the big impressive git he's going to take down. But otherwise, pretty much perfect.

Mozzie is so good, and his relationship with Neal is a real favourite of mine.

Ruffalo is a little taller than Falk, true. He's still very short compared to the average Hollywooder though, and he seems pretty good at making himself look smaller if his role as Banner/Hulk is anything to go by.

I don't envy the guy, at any rate. There's going to be knives sharpening in readiness if that one goes ahead!

(NB. 'The Riddle of the Sands' is on Film4 right now, Simon MacCorkindale and Michael York. Just thinking it might be relevant to your interests. 'Taches aboard stiff upper lips everywhere I see!)

I was out in the middle of nowhere at the time, but thank you! It's a good film. Good book, too. Written by Erskine Childers, who died at only 52, when the Brits shot him for being a dastardly Irish rebel. Everyone's a critic, clearly.

Although his son became President of Ireland later, so one assumes he had the last laugh.

Hart to Hart was such a silly, charming, fun series. I don't have any ideas for casting but a remake would be good as long as it's well done. I hope they stick to the other Mr Hart being a redhead. :oD

They should! Telly is lacking in redheads, which is a shame. I suspect that this version won't have such big hair though!

Gay Hart to Hart?

Wasn't that 'Thunder in Paradise'? Or was it just me that got that vibe?

Ha! Definitely not just you! Chris Lemmon was totally Hulk Hogan's wife. They lived with their daughter in a little cottage by the sea, for goodness sakes. They didn't solve murders though, so it wasn't quite the same.

I can't wait to see it and see what they've done with it. There are so many ways it could be totally rubbish - because they're brilliant at finding ways to make remakes rubbish. But it could also be so good if it works. And also it's entirely the kind of setup that doesn't need to be a remake and could just be Original Television with a few tweaks to it. As if we were allowed that any more.

They basically love making things rubbish, and crushing everybody's dreams, don't they. But if they do manage to get it right, it could be great.

I do agree that it doesn't need to be a remake, but I can see the attraction for them. And the A-Team remake worked, so there's still hope.

My husband wants them to cast the original couple as the parents.

I think it would be a slash writer's wet dream, even if done badly. I hope they don't do it badly.

I very much hope they don't do it badly! With the way that companies think, if it fails they'll assume it's because of the gay thing, rather than because of any mistakes that might have been made. And telly badly needs to do the gay thing properly.

Wagner and Powers would be good as the parents! They were considering a reunion movie a year or two back, so presumably they're still happy to be associated with it.

I always found hart to hart very heterosexual and i cannot imagine it being a gay couple, but whatever, it has to be John Barrowman, he is the obvious choice.

Are you sure you didn't dream this??!!

There's a news link. If I dreamed it, did I write the press release myself? :p

The original was hetero, sure, but this will be different, just with the same basic set up. Barrowman would probably be considered too old these days.

??? He's not even 50 yet! There has to be a younger one tho or it would be too much like Vicious!
Sep. 18th, 2015 05:29 pm (UTC)
I know, but TV likes its heroes to look like they're barely shaving.

Besides, fond though I am of Barrowman, I doubt he's the kind of actor they'd be looking for. They'd be wanting one with a little less ham, I'm guessing. ;)

I misread Jonathan as being brought up not by Max but by Freeway! Do I get the pilot writer's job?

I used to love Hart to Hart ... it was so much fun.
I hope they go through with this!

It could be really good, yes. Here's hoping!
