Gardener's World

Last winter I bought three baby rose bushes, and the first one has flowered. I would claim gardening brilliance, but the success is probably mostly due to my having planted it and then left it alone. Here, have a rose:

It's a lot more red in the flesh (petal?) than it looks here; the light was being a bit unco-operative. It's called Rock 'n' Roll, which is largely why I bought it, but it's really funky. Smells amazing, too. The other two roses haven't flowered yet, although one shouldn't take too long now. I shall attempt to update you accordingly. You lucky people. :)

Aw, pretty! And very cool. :-)

Rock 'n' Roll can't be pretty! It's supposed to be rebellious.

ETA: On balance, I may have chosen the wrong icon for making that point.

Very attractive:) A psych-rock plant with all the different pinks and reds? The Move? Are plants more classical than rock? There's a BBC four doc in it! I hope your rose doesn't live fast and die young;p

I have removed the drugs and alcohol. I think it's sulking.

It's good when you have a camera! That rose is glorious! Like a pink lettuce!!

New icon!

And no trying to eat my rose. *glare* I have enough trouble with the greenfly! :p

Wow. Luminously gorgeous!

success is probably mostly due to my having planted it and then left it alone.
How'd you manage it? That usually works like the black thumb of death for me!

Roses are pretty obliging really. I'm no gardener, but I haven't done anything drastic to one yet! Provided they don't get eaten alive by greenfly, they seem to do okay on their own. Don't let them get too dry if it doesn't rain in a while, but otherwise leave them to it. Apparently you're supposed to feed them, but I never have, as that's a bit too much like proper gardening.

roses that actually smell like roses? harder to get nowadays i mostly have the very old fashioned roses- gallica, damascena, rugosa. simple flowers but great scent and impossible to kill

Yes, the modern hybrids can be a bit rubbish in the scent department. The place where I bought mine from rated each one according to scent and ease of growing though, so it wasn't hard to choose good ones. Rock 'n' Roll actually only rated a 3/5 on scent, but it's really good. Rose #2 rated 5/5, so presumably will be even better.

Oh gods, listen to me. I'm turning into a gardener...

More & more hybridizers are working on scent as well as disease resistance & repeat blooming.

It really is possible to have it all--in roses, at any rate.

Have you tried Francis Meilland, btw? It's awesome!

Asking 'cause you're now growing at least 2 of the varieties I dote on.

That's a bit pink for my taste, I'm afraid. Pink is a colour that I have a very low tolerance of! I quite fancy an orange one. And a blue one, but they don't do them (properly) yet!

Just Joey is a good orange one, then. I've had one for years. Chris Evert (just got this spring) is almost fluorescent orange. Both have a good smell.

Meilland is cream-and-pink. Very healthy, but that won't change is color!

Thank you! Just looked them up. Chris Evert is very striking, isn't it. I'm quite taken with Oranges & Lemons, but I do wonder if it might be a bit too lurid.

There's no such thing as "too lurid" in a rose!

Speaking as someone who has fallen for the occasional ill-advised purchase--do make sure to look up disease resistance before choosing!

Thank you, yes. The place where I buy them is very good about rating them all according to ease of growing and disease resistance, so hopefully that shouldn't be a problem.
