30 Days Of Adam Adamant #3

05. Your song/fan mix for the show

I love this question. I had lots of fun answering this one, but I took a different tack to the traditional approach, of searching for songs with appropriate themes. Adam was frozen in a block of ice in 1902, and thawed in 1966. That means that he missed a whole chunk of the history of music - the entirety of the history of popular music. So I decided to clue him in, entirely against his wishes no doubt, with a quick tour of the first two thirds of the twentieth century. Beginning with something much older, that he would have been familiar with, and then gradually bringing him bang up to date (or up to date for 1966, anyway).

The links are all to YouTube.

Handel - Music For The Royal Fireworks

Debussy - The Girl With The Flaxen Hair

Britten - The Young Person's Guide To The Orchestra

Louis Armstrong - Ain't Misbehavin'

Duke Ellington - It Don't Mean A Thing

Herb Zane - "You Name It" Mambo

Little Willie John - Fever

Dean Martin - Dark Town Strutters Ball

Ray Charles - Let The Good Times Roll

Frank Sinatra - The Lady Is A Tramp

Little Richard - Good Golly Miss Molly

Chuck Berry - Johnny B Goode

Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes

Cliff Richard & The Shadows (or the Drifters as they still were then) - Move It

The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand

The Kinks - You Really Got Me

Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

The Monkees - Take A Giant Step

Cream - I Feel Free

13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss Me

I don't know them well enough to include them in a history of music. Is there anything in particular that you'd recommend?

If the aim of the list is to present an overview of popular music since 1901, G&S don't qualify; they had their final bust-up in 1898. If Adam didn't already know about them before he went into the ice, that's his own look-out.

He probably didn't. I can just see him dismissing music hall as a den of iniquity. :)

But it is operetta and Queen Victoria had a private viewing of the Gondoliers once.

Too many good tunes to suggest just one, but you could always put in 'Modern Major General' in honour of Marcus Cole.

Probably shouldn't have Handel either then.

I wanted to include the Handel as something that Adam would be familiar with, as a good starting point. I probably didn't explain that too well.

And "Modern Major General" certainly is a very good song!

I know. :) Elvis ought to raise a few eyebrows as well.
