Blake's 7: Shadow

Whatever happened to Karl Howman? He used to appear all over the place. I don't think I've seen him since Mulberry though, and that was five million years ago at least.

A good episode this one. Blake decides that the space mafia - the Terra Nostra - are the perfect allies for his rebellion. Also dealing with the Terra Nostra is Karl Howman, trying to buy drugs for his sister. Meanwhile, Avon has taken to wandering around dressed in a giant silver sheet, Vila is wearing pyjamas, and Cally seems to be wafting about the ship in a ballgown. Oddly enough none of this is terribly helpful.

Anyway, Blake sets about plotting with the Terra Nostra, and seems surprised when the mafia turn out to be untrustworthy. He then decides to try out-manoeuvring them instead, by screwing with their drug-trafficking operation. At the same time, Orac takes to romping around the Liberator trying to find out what makes it tick. Cally tries to interfere with his fiddling, and winds up possessed by him, or hypnotised, or something. Poor Cally. Her telepathy only ever seems to be a liability; although, to be strictly fair, Vila also gets taken over. We don't see that though, and all that happens to him is that he thinks he's been to a party and got drunk, whilst in contrast Cally gets the full Anthony Perkins treatment. As she goes quietly mad in a corner, everybody else goes off to do battle against the Terra Nostra. In order to help (probably), they dress up in judo outfits, and then go hunting mushrooms. Literally hunting, because they're telepathic mushrooms and can move about. They also sing. And while we're on the subject (we're not, I appreciate that), when did Avon become so awesome at fighting and gunplay? He's a computer genius and failed credit thief. It's hard to see what part of that would lead to being James Bond.

And then Cally joins forces with the mushrooms, and they all fight together to defeat Orac, who has been inhabited by an evil telepathic entity. In thanks, Blake incinerates every singing, dancing, telepathic mushroom on the planet, just to piss off the Terra Nostra. I don't much recommend trying to help Blake. It seems like rather a wasted effort to me.

A shiny space station, headquarters to the deadly Terra Nostra.

Karl Howman attempts to fight the entire mafia on his own.

'Shadow', a highly powerful drug made from intelligent mushrooms. It is a deadly and priceless narcotic. It is not a scented bath bead.

Avon and his giant silver sheet.

Cally has a random three minutes of awesome, when she threatens to blow up the space station if it isn't kind to her friends. It doesn't lead anywhere, but it's nice to see her briefly getting to do something that doesn't involve being possessed.

Cally gets possessed by Orac (actually by an evil telepathic entity inhabiting Orac, but she doesn't know that until the mushrooms band together to sing her a song).

You have no idea how much I'm enjoying recapping this episode.

The team head off on a mushroom-spotting expedition.

Whilst Cally joins forces with the mushrooms to save the universe.

Gan's greatest contribution to the episode is to press a button so that Karl Howman can look at a planet. Yep, Blake's really utilising his seven to the best of its sevenness.

Avon's remarkable shooting skills allow the team to discover that the Terra Nostra is just another branch of the Federation. Earth's super-evil super-government also runs the mafia. I suppose it all helps to cut down on bureaucracy.

This time Cally has been possessed by the mushrooms. This looks like much more fun than being possessed by an evil entity pretending to be a novelty disco computer.

Cally plays with her pet mushroom. Whether it's grateful for being taken away from its planet and stuck in a tub, whilst the rest of its species get incinerated by Blake, I have no idea. I'm afraid I don't speak mushroom. This is a failing that worries me surprisingly little.

That looks like a coffee or chocolate scented Bath bead. And those mushrooms don't really look that mushroomy. More like giant gel caplets or something. Do they have stems? I guess not because they're wild mushrooms. Cally looks like she's having fun. Her little pet may come in handy in a future episode.

They do have stems, yes. They're what they walk on, sort of.

This is the one that asks "Where are the good guys?" isn't it? Love that bit.

It's hard to see what part of that would lead to being James Bond.
You're forgetting: He's *Avon*. He has no alternative than to out-Bond Bond, and anyone else with Pretensions.
