I have a new keyboard. The spaces between the keys are different, and my fingers are confused. The backspace is the wrong distance away, and the home key isn't where I expect, and for some reason there's a sleep key right by the backspace, which means I've accidentally sent my computer to sleep about three times when I was just trying to correct a spelling mistake. It's a brilliantly stupid idea to do that. The keyboard's a nice colour though, which slightly makes up for confusing me. It's quite remarkable the degree to which mild panic can set in when you're in the middle of typing something really quite important, and unexpected keyboard irregularities cause you to have to delete something, but you actually apparently kill the computer instead. Sleep mode does look vaguely like self-destruct, because the screen flashes, and then everything goes black, and a blue LED on the computer goes all flashy. And what the hell, give me my work back! On the plus side, this has made word processing slightly more interesting than normal.

Also, Windows 7 is bloody weird. I realise I'm probably the last person on the planet to notice this, but I always was a little backward.

Also also, I just got rung up by an Indian call centre bloke called "Peter", who wanted to discuss my IP address. Scams are getting weirder by the day. I couldn't make out the rest of what he was saying, but Great Uncle Google suggests that it was part of quite a famous scam claiming to be about Microsoft security. So I suppose I should feel honoured to have been rung up by famousish crooks? I shall have to think about that one. Basically I prefer my crooks to be very swashbuckly, and not to hang around in call centres. It's one of the areas where I guess I'm just a little old-fashioned.

I have made a post that doesn't involve TV or music! Crikey. That's almost a bit like nearly having an actual life.

I'm in the same boat. My keyboard died this fall, and I had to make do for several weeks with an old Dell whose keys work sporadically. I was getting ready to order one from Amazon when I found a Belkin at the Little Theatre Fall Fundraiser for $2. It's very 80s and smaller than I've gotten used to, but it works perfectly. I figure I can live with it's quirks. ;)

Yes, I think I could easily forgive a $2 keyboard as well. :) It's just frustrating when your fingers know how far to reach, but suddenly they're reaching too far, or in slightly the wrong direction!

My new computer's buttons are all in the wrong places and it's been months and they're still in all the wrong places. I have even used that thing that you can download to change some of them, because otherwise there were just delete keys where I iddn't understand so now most of the keys on my keyboard are delete keys, but NONE of them are stupid enough to send my computer to sleep randomly. That's TERRIBLE. And I think that's the sort of thing that the key changer thing can't change. It won't put ctrl keys where I need them either, or make my function keys WORTHWHILE.

I quite like windows 7 now that I have sorted it all out and changed everything about it.

I hope your computer makes more sense soon. Changing what it does when you press the sleep button should be in the power options, now that I think of it. You might have thought of this as well. But in case.

You are a genius, and now I have to think of a good excuse as to why I didn't think of that myself. Insane keyboard button has now been deactivated! The keys are still in slightly the wrong places, but I guess I'll get used to that eventually.
