Pocket-sized T rex

I love dinosaurs. I don't think it's fair that we're not allowed them anymore.

Seriously, though, this is a lovely find. Intriguing from a "why did some dinosaurs get so big?" perspective, too. It's also quite interesting that all the small dinosaurs seem to be found in China. I wonder what that's all about.

ETA: Probably a false alarm. Looks like this is a juvenile Tarbosaurus, possibly T. bataar.

With the small dinos in China, I think it's basically that they just have some excellent preservation sites! The main site that they seem to find the good stuff at seems to have been overwhelmed by volcanic gases or some such, which tends to stop that annoying opportunistic predation thing.... :)

A friend of mine (we did our MScs together) has a blog that you might find interesting: http://archosaurmusings.wordpress.com/ I really need to drop him a line to see how he's doing in China!

Wow. That is an awesome Quetzalcoatlus head. It would be so cool to find something like that. :)

And yes, I imagine you're right about the preservation sites. Some of the very small dinosaurs that they've been finding there recently - Microraptor, for instance, and the very cute Nemicolopterus - are very easily lost, I suppose. It's a shame that the whole death/preservation/fossilisation thing is so hit and miss!
