Hello from 2005

Well, this is fun. After my router got fried by the storm a few weeks back, I had to resort to my back-up one, which is very old. And has now apparently died. So I've had to get my old computer out of storage, since it still has one of the old style modems. (They don't work on Windows 7, so I can't use it with my usual machine). So I am now on my ancient, steam-powered Windows XP computer, with a rickety old modem. I love my old computer, don't get me wrong; it was the first one I ever bought. But it's slow. And I do mean s...l...o...w... It doesn't like most websites, it can barely cope with Firefox, and it locked up for half the afternoon when I tried to check e-mail. I have ordered a new router, obviously! But in the meantime I shall be back in the stone age, communicating by carrier pigeon.

I am not especially a fan of thunder storms. Just in case anybody was wondering.

while I sympathize about the sloooow modem -- just back from my mum's house, she has the worst ADSL in the world, it might as well be dialup -- I won't hear a thing against Windows XP, I'm typing this on an XP machine.

I quite agree about Windows XP. I was perfectly happy with it. It's such a shame when they insist on fiddling. The poor computer can't really cope with the modern world, though!

And hello. :) You're so quiet these days! I hope everything is okay with the family.

we've had some health issues the last few months, but it's also that I'm just not on LJ very much anymore, so few of the old crowd are active.

Sorry to hear about the health issues. I quite understand about the latter point. I hardly see anybody around now from when I first joined LJ. Goodness knows where they've all gone.

Ohoh ... hope your new modem arrives quickly!!! Funny how quickly we get used to higher internet speed and all that, eh?

Faster internet speed is good. :) Faster processing power is better!

It's terrible being an antique old dinosaur in a hi-technology world. I mourned XP too, especially considering the infuriating unusability of the OS that superceded it. (The ribbon, what the heck was that about?) I still think of smartphones and tablets as 'new-fangled'...

Fortunately I've never had to use Windows 2000. I have had to use Windows 8 once or twice though, and it's astonishingly bad.

Aw, I hope the router turns up asap - that particular sort of time travel is one I'm sure you could do without!

I hadn't thought of it as time travel. Maybe it's not so bad after all!

I hope the router turns up soon and that your old router speeds up now the weather is better, in the meantime. Mine kept disconnecting yesterday because of the rain.

The router is actually working again now, but I have to keep refreshing, as web pages stick without loading. Poor thing has definitely had its best days. That was quite some weather yesterday though, yes. Certainly doesn't help!
