Anybody seen Julie Burchill's piece in the Guardian today? Spectacularly hateful, and quite took my breath away. Newspapers need to know that this sort of thing can never be okay.

Trigger warnings for complete dickheadery on trans issues. Actually, scratch that. This isn't just a trans issue, this is mindbogglingly unacceptable behaviour from a national newspaper, whatever your orientation:

Somewhat heartened by the responses, but completely dumbfounded by the Guardian itself. Maybe it got by because it's Sunday, and the editor was asleep?

I couldn't believe it as I was reading it, I still can't really believe it.

It's like something from another era entirely. I can only think that there's nobody in charge on a Sunday. Surely nobody could have okayed that?!

What the holy living fuck? I'm sorry, i probably shouldnt use such language (sorry mum). But what the holy living fuck? I thought the Guardian was supposed to be a liberal paper? And she seems to think "cis" is an insult. Research is your friend. Aren't journalists supposed to know that? Didnt make it to the end. Maybe there's a punchline, and it turns out the whole thing was a joke.

Only stopped by for the Clarence videos! I definitely need them now!

Here. You deserve it: http://youtu.be/9pQbPT2Ev9o

Yes, the lack of any sort of journalism in that piece is very apparent. And she goes to the trouble of pointing out that engaging in bullying is never good as a line of defence (or at least I think that's what she's arguing); but bullying is exactly what she's doing herself. The whole thing defies belief, to put it mildly.

The Observer and the Guardian are linked, yes. I'm never entirely sure how, as I don't tend to buy actual papers, but they're sort of like siamese twins.

I don't know what else Julie Burchill writes for. She would certainly be very much at home with the Mail though, if this article is anything to go by. She can set up her desk next to that woman who tried to suggest that Stephen Gately died of being gay.
