The Box Of Delights

Let me take you on a journey back through time, to November 1984. That was when the BBC debuted a magical, six part adventure series starring Patrick Troughton and Robert Stephens, that was to have a major effect on a generation of school children. Exciting, and just the right side of frightening, it tells the story of young Kay Harker, home from school for the Christmas holidays, and destined to become mixed up in a tale of magic, wolves and talking rats; of flying cars, kidnappings and enchanted statues. Mixing the Christmas traditions of British history, it combines the Pagan (Herne the Hunter, and the "old" magic), with Christianity, in the form of the bishops and choir boys caught up in the middle of the adventure. And it's fab.

Traditionally watched weekly, timed so that the last episode is on Christmas Eve, tonight's the night for episode one. So, courtesy of YouTube, here it is in three installments. Yes, the FX are very eighties BBC, but since when did that matter. Pull up your chair, draw your curtains, and be nine again. You won't regret it, honest.
