Cue creepy underground station

Yep, another bouncy eighties theme, and tonight's is about as eighties as you can get. Jangly proto-techno music and heavy use of synthesisers from The Equaliser, which the Americans would keep insisting on spelling with a Z. In TV listings here it was always spelt the English way, but of course the advert bumper spelt it the American way. Oh, the confusion! The Equalis/zer was one of the grittier shows to come out of the eighties, and eventually wound up in a pretty late night slot, presumably because audiences used to the likes of The A-Team got confused by all the murderous drug addicts and abusive fathers. It was a good one, though, and thanks to the casting, turned out to be entertaining in unexpected ways. Many's the late night continuity announcer that I've heard brought to near disaster by an ill-planned intro. "And coming up next we have Edwardwoodwoodwood... wood... wood? and Keith Sz... Keith Sz... The Equaliser!" Actually, I say "many", but it was probably just the same guy, sitting alone in his little booth, cursing the CBS casting department.

Annoying lack of things blowing up in this one. Lots of people got shot, though. That's always a fairly good alternative.

NB: More from Otherworld. In episode three, a woman enjoys everlasting youth thanks to her amazing holiday resort, where she steals the life essence of her guests, and turns it into sparkly lip balm.

Could it actually be a sci-fi sitcom, and I just didn't notice that back in 1985?

Yep, watched this one as well. Not quite every episode because it was on later.

Do you remember the one with Adam Ant?

I do, yes. I haven't seen it in years, obviously, but I remember when it first aired. It was so nice to see him again.

I loved this show - sad news, they're planning to do a movie with Russell Crowe as Edward Woodward, as it were.

Oh dear. I'd heard there was going to be a remake, but I didn't know that Russell Crowe was involved. Say it ain't so!

I hate Russell Crowe. Why can't they just let Keith Szarabajka have the lead? He's about the right age now to take over from Edward Woodwardward.

because no one can pronounce that name? That was Mick, wasn't it, on the show. It's been ages since I've seen it - Stewart Coupland from the Police did the theme song, I remember, and I enjoyed the fact that it focused on plots rather than cheezy romance.

Looks like I have the perfect opportunity to use my default icon. :)

You can see how Szarabajka is pronounced over here: http://www.darktale.tv Enter the site (bottom right) and click on Bio/Resume. And yes, he played Mickey Kostmayer and yes, I think he'd be brilliant to play Robert McCall. If you click on Voiceovers and then click on the animation reel one, you can hear him doing a lot of different voices (including the low, deep, not-quite-American, not-quite-English accent of Holtz from Angel which was not animated but I'm glad it was slipped in somewhere).

Yes, afraid so that Russell Crowe has announced he's attached to the project, wants to play Robert McCall. I don't expect anything good in the movie but I certainly hope that seasons 2-4 are released, if the movie is made (hope they'd be released even if the movie isn't made).

Keith S couldn't play McCall - he'd have to be Mickey all growed up. Taking over the baton, either from a dead or retired McCall. I guess that wouldn't pull in the new viewers, though, hence the total reset.

It's a shame. I was very happy indeed with the A-Team remake, and that's my all-time favourite show that we're talking about - so I shouldn't be so suspicious about this. It's just that Russell Crowe is awful! Without Ewar Woowar, they're just likely to end up with some generic gritty thriller, so why bother giving it the same name?

*sigh*

I hate remakes. Except the ones I don't...
